Don’t put off brake repair

Brakes are the most important safety mechanisms in your car, yet most people push off the need for brake repair far longer than they should.

A typical brake system consists of disk brakes in the front and either disk or drum brakes in the rear. The components are connected by a system of hoses and tubes linking the master cylinder to all four wheels. Also included in the connection are the: parking brake; power brake booster and the anti-lock system. Within the hoses and tubes is hydraulic oil or brake fluid.

When you step on the brake pedal the master cylinder forces brake fluid through the hoses to the braking unit of each wheel. For the system to work properly, it is important that there is no air in the hoses in order for the brakes to work properly. When there is air in the hose it compresses causing the brake pedal to feel spongy which reduces the effectiveness of the brake.

A reduction in brake fluid occurs as the brake system is used. As brake pads wear out the caliper piston is pushed closer to the pad to engage them when you step on the pedal. If you allow the pads to wear out and the brake fluid to be lost, your car will not stop properly when you step on the pedal which puts you and your passengers in danger.
